worked for a while but things became lax.... by the late 80's cars were being quoted at the 280ps limit but were certainly over it. The J-Spec Z engine, for example, is identical to US-spec in terms of power other than tuning (and they have BETTER fuel in Japan) and a LACK of precats. Since US dynos are different to Australian ones it's never been possible to do a direct stock US vs. J-Spec comparison, but I would think a J-spec is at least at the same power level as a US one, if not marginally more.

Late 90's cars were becoming a little bit more obvious, with as usual the 280ps quoted output but dyno figures suggesting mid to high 300's being more realistic, some of the special edition R34's being noteable examples. Another situation most people cite is the R34 GT-t with quoted 280ps, and the R34 GTR also at quoted 280ps. Hmmm... you'd think the extra turbo and 100cc would do something, wouldn't you? It seems manufacturers are soon to just be a little more blatant about their power output figures with a lot of cars currently in development having realistic figures claimed..... a few are claiming 400ps or thereabouts, with some of the more expensive stuff hinting at bigger outputs than that.
